Sort Before the Crew Arrives
Group items by what is leaving, what is staying, and what may need special disposal. You do not have to make a perfect pile, but a clear decision about each item prevents confusion and saves loading time.
Separate Keep Items
Use a different room, colored tape, or obvious labels for belongings that must not be removed. This is especially important during estate cleanouts, garage cleanouts, and moves where wanted and unwanted furniture may be mixed together.
Create a Clear Path
Remove small obstacles from hallways, stairs, driveways, gates, and doorways. Secure pets and keep children away from loading paths. If the crew must carry items a long distance, tell the company before arrival.
Identify Heavy or Awkward Items
Point out appliances, safes, exercise equipment, large furniture, construction debris, or anything unusually dense. The provider may need different equipment, additional labor, or a different vehicle.
Ask About Restricted Materials
Many services restrict chemicals, fuels, paints, batteries, pressurized containers, medical waste, certain electronics, or other regulated material. Rules vary, so ask before placing questionable items in the pickup pile.
Prepare for the Final Walkthrough
Before the vehicle leaves, walk through the property and confirm that everything intended for removal is gone and everything meant to stay is still there. Keep your receipt and any documentation you need for donations or property records.
