Before the First Box
Start by reducing what you own and creating a labeling system. Give each room a short name or color and write it on the top and at least one side of every box. Keep a marker, tape, labels, scissors, and packing paper together in a portable packing station.
Kitchen
Pack serving pieces and rarely used appliances first. Use small boxes for canned goods and dense cookware. Wrap breakables individually and fill empty space so items cannot shift. Keep cleaning supplies, one pan, basic utensils, and a few dishes available until the final day.
Bedrooms and Closets
Pack out-of-season clothing, extra linens, decor, and shoes early. Use suitcases for clothing and other soft items. Keep hardware from disassembled furniture in labeled bags and attach the bag securely to the furniture or place all hardware in a clearly marked parts box.
Bathroom
Dispose of expired products and separate liquids that could leak. Keep daily toiletries, medication, toilet paper, towels, and shower supplies in an essentials bag that stays with you. Do not bury important medication in a moving box.
Home Office
Back up computers before moving. Keep passports, identification, financial papers, contracts, and irreplaceable records with you. Photograph cable connections before disconnecting electronics and label chargers so setup is faster at the new home.
Garage and Storage
Sort hazardous or restricted materials before moving day because many movers will not transport certain chemicals, fuels, or pressurized containers. Pack tools securely, protect sharp edges, and use small boxes for dense hardware. Drain equipment when required.
Your Last-Night Box
Your last-night box should cover one evening and one morning without opening twenty cartons. Include bedding, chargers, toiletries, medications, basic food and utensils, coffee supplies if needed, pet items, paper towels, trash bags, a simple toolkit, and clean clothes.
